Illustration In The Local Area
Recently I looked for some local illustration clubs and groups I may be able to get involved in to further improve my artistic skills and contacts.
Obviously there is the illustration cafe run by the Illustration tutors after college hours, a club for either getting involved in new college projects of just a place to finish a bit of coursework.
Aswell as this I found a local arts club, link here. Could be interesting to get involved with.

Arts and Crafts fairs
After looking at a few available local arts and crafts fairs I found this. This event is held in Saltash, Cornwall on December 3rd, but it cost £15 to set up a stall.
I also found another local arts market in Tavistock on December 4th, although there is little information a link to the page can be found here.

The Widening Possibilities within Illustration...
Why did you choose illustration?
Illustration is an area iv'e known that I wanted to do for a while, last year i completed the National Diploma in Art and Design in preperation for starting year 1 Illustration this year. I chose illustration because I feel I have the ability to further extend my skills in the area and learn the neccesary techniques needed for industry. I feel that I already have already developed a very personalised style which will help me succeed in my chosen area.
What area of illustration are you most inspired by?
The area of illustration I am most inspired by is interperative illustration, in particular; book covers, posters, graphic novels and mural work. Id like to be able to follow one or more of these paths in the future, to help me become a sucessful illustrator. Im heavily influenced by what some would call the "street art" scene and would love to become involved and sucessful in this scene.
What opportunities are available in your area/region?
The oppertunities available in my chosen area are vast, I could concentrate on specific areas such as zines, posters, books, clothing and mural work but I think the best way is to suceed is by making contacts with people already involved in the area. Collaborating with other artists to create more interesting and dynamic pieces, I think its more about who you know rather than what you know...
What skill sets are needed for this area?
I will need a wide range of skills and attributes to achieve in illustration, a unique and personalised style aswell as a wide range of drawing techniques, combined with a use of varied materials will help in varying my work from others in the same area. It is also important that aswell as having a good drawing technique, I master the skills used to alter my art digitally. Learning to use programmes such as inDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator will help me finalise pieces and give them a more professional finish.
Which skills do you have already?
I feel as an illustrator I already have a very personlised and highly develop style, im comfortable using and experimenting with a wide range of materials, especially manipulating shapes and forms. I have basic ICT skills using artistic programmes but wish to further my skills in this area.
What other skills do you need to acquire? And what steps will you take in obtaining these skills?
I need to acquire a better understanding of the programmes used in the industry, such as photoshop and adobe inDesign. This will help further my artistic horizons and broaden my audience as alot of art is now done digitally. It will also help give a crisper, cleaner look to my pieces helping me to create posters, T's etc. I will obtain these skills by attending the digital lessons which will take place in college, helping me become more compitant in my chosen area.
List and explain three pathways to utilize self-promotion in developing a portfolio.
Produce and evaluate your own SWOT analysis.
Strengths:
> Personilised style
> Drawing skills
> Creativity
> Material manipulation
> Imagination
> Eye for shape and space
Weaknesses:
> Digital skills
> Time management ( I draw slow... very slow)
> Find it hard to relate assignments to something im interested in
Oppertunities:
> Done artwork and DJ'ed for a local night called "Melty Face"
> Planning on creating my own posters, T's and selling them at the nights each week
> Collaborating with other artists
> Doing anything to get my name out there
> Entering college competitions
Threats:
> Competition in my chosen area
> Losing interest in my course, quitting as its not what I expected.
